SHORT BIOGRAPHY Professor Brunson holds a B.A. in Sociology and a M.S. in Justice Studies from Arizona State University - West and Arizona State University - Main, respectfully. He also holds a M.A. in Sociology and a Certificate of Advance Study in Disability Studies from Syracuse University where he earned a Ph.D. in Sociology. As a Public Sociologist, Dr. Brunson uses qualitative methodologies and institutional ethnography, a method of inquiry influenced by the feminist movement of the 1960s, to expand the fields of Disability Studies/Sociology of Disability and Sociology of Work and the Professions. His dissertation titled "The Practice and Organization of Sign Language Interpreting in Video Relay Service: An Institutional Ethnography of Access" explores the social organization of the work of sign language interpreting in the context of professionalization in order to document how the access happens as it does. As well as being a sociologist, Professor Brunson is a certified sign language interpreter. As an interpreter, Dr. Brunson has worked in a variety of settings ranging from post-secondary to legal and performing arts. He has also taught interpreters in the junior college setting and has provided numerous workshops for sign language interpreters. Professor Brunson has presented and published in areas of disability and access, professionalization of sign language interpreting, changing nature of work of sign language interpreters, and the identity of deafness. He is currently working a manuscript based on his dissertation that theorizes about the changes facing the field of sign language interpreting. Dr. Brunson is the 2009 Irving K. Zola Emerging Scholar in Disability Studies award recepient. He is also a member of the ACLU.
